What We Believe

THE WORD ALONE

THE WORD ALONE

We believe the Bible to be God’s Word to humankind and so it is our ultimate guide. The main message of the Bible is God’s grace to us in Jesus Christ.

GRACE ALONE

GRACE ALONE

We have nothing in ourselves of merit to offer God, but are only and totally dependent on God’s free favor towards us shown in Jesus Christ.

FAITH ALONE

FAITH ALONE

The only appropriate response to the WORD of God’s GRACE is grateful acceptance and trust of that Word of Grace (i.e. FAITH in Jesus Christ).

Church of the Cross is a Reformed Church.  "Reformed" means we adhere to the principles of the Protestant Reformation: the Word Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone.  To God alone be the glory!

Church of the Cross-beliefs

The bulk of what we believe we hold in common with the Christian church around the world and throughout the ages as formulated in three universally accepted summaries of Christian teaching (called creeds) from the first centuries after Jesus’ death and resurrection:

  • The Apostles' Creed
  • The Nicene Creed
  • The Athanasian Creed

Church of Cross Beliefs

To further explain these beliefs (for educating the youth, defending the faith from attack, correction of errors, etc.) longer statements of belief were written during the Protestant Reformation.

  • The Heidelberg Catechism
  • The Belgic Confession
  • The Cannons of Dordt

Church of Cross Beliefs

In the 20th century a short contemporary expression of our faith was formulated:

  • Our Song of Hope

In the 21st century a further statement of belief was adopted to respond to the evil of racism.

  • The Confession of Belhar
